The stunning Nefertari Tomb, situated on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor, within Egypt's Valley of the Queens, is renowned for its exquisite artwork, stunning architecture, and fascinating history, making it a must-visit destination for any lover of ancient Egyptian art and history.
The Nefertari Tomb was built during the reign of Ramesses II in the Nineteenth Dynasty, as a final resting place for the queen and her descendants. The tomb consists of a series of chambers and halls, with the burial chamber at the center, adorned with colorful paintings and intricate reliefs that depict scenes from Nefertari's life and afterlife.
Upon entering the tomb, the vibrant colors and detailed artwork adorning the walls and ceilings of the different chambers immediately capture the visitors attention. The artwork depicts scenes of daily life, religious rituals, and mythological events, and is considered to be some of the finest examples of ancient Egyptian art.
The most iconic chamber of the Nefertari Tomb is the burial chamber, which features a stunning representation of the goddess Nut on the ceiling, with outstretched arms spanning the length of the chamber. The walls are adorned with intricate reliefs that depict the queen being welcomed into the afterlife by various deities, including Osiris, Anubis, and Horus.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Nefertari Tomb is the level of detail and precision in the artwork. The paintings were created using a variety of pigments, including red, yellow, green, blue, and black, and the artists used a range of techniques to create a sense of depth and three-dimensionality in the scenes.
Another fascinating aspect of the Nefertari Tomb is the significance of the queen herself. Nefertari was one of the most prominent queens of ancient Egypt and was revered as a powerful and influential figure. Her tomb was not only a place of rest for her physical body, but also a place of spiritual significance where her soul could reside for eternity.
Continuing the exploration of the Nefertari Tomb, visitors are struck by the incredible level of detail and symbolism in the artwork. Each scene and figure has a specific meaning and significance, providing a fascinating glimpse into the beliefs and rituals of ancient Egyptian culture.
One of the most remarkable representations of this symbolism is the goddess Maat, who stands for justice, truth, and cosmic balance. Maat is frequently depicted alongside the god Thoth, who is linked to writing and wisdom, emphasizing the value of honesty and knowledge in ancient Egyptian culture.
Another remarkable aspect of the Nefertari Tomb is the use of hieroglyphics, which were the written language of ancient Egypt. The walls and ceilings are covered in intricate hieroglyphic inscriptions that tell the story of Nefertari's life and afterlife, as well as providing instructions for various rituals and offerings.
But the Nefertari Tomb is not just a testament to the art and culture of ancient Egypt - it is also a testament to the ingenuity and skill of modern conservationists and archaeologists. The restoration work that has been carried out on the tomb is truly remarkable, and has involved a range of advanced technologies and techniques to preserve and protect the artwork.
One of the most notable restoration projects was the creation of a replica tomb, which allows visitors to experience the artwork up close without damaging the original paintings. This replica was constructed using state-of-the-art materials and techniques, and is an incredible achievement in its own right.
The Nefertari Tomb's ability to still astonish and inspire travelers, countless years after it was first constructed is nonetheless, its most amazing feature. Anyone who appreciates the art and culture of this captivating civilization can expect it to be an extremely unique and inspiring visit, thanks to its beauty, history, and significance to the people who lived there.

Designed to be the largest Egyptology Museum in the world, known as the GEM for short, will soon welcome visitors from around the world. Located near Cairo at the foot of the Giza Pyramids, the opening will begin the long awaited 100th year celebrations of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. All guests will get a close-up look at more than 100,000 pieces of the world’s greatest ancient treasures, including every piece of the Tutankhamun’s Treasure collection.
The Grand Egyptian Museum was designed to house the treasures from the current Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo. The idea of the GEM was launched by Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak 20 years ago. Strategically, a location just over a mile from the well-known Giza pyramids was chosen for the future museum.
Heneghan Peng, a Dublin-based architect, presented the winning bid in 2003 after a UNESCO-sponsored tender received over 1500 responses. Work got going right away but was interrupted multiple times, most notably by the 2011 revolution and the recent Covid-19 pandemic.
The construction project was resumed by Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the current president of Egypt. The final cost is expected to be around one billion euros, which is double the original budget, making it a monument that even the pharaohs themselves would be proud of!
The magnificent alabaster complex spreads out behind the pyramids, a half-hour drive from the center of Cairo. The structure itself blends with the desolate desert landscape setting. The exterior, which is three floors high, is embellished with Egyptian-inspired pyramidal design which includes hieroglyphic patterns.
There will be 24,000 m2 of exhibition area inside the museum, which is equivalent to several football fields. More than 100,000 antique artifacts, the most of which have never been viewed by the public, will be on display. A 12m tall statue of King Ramses II, which had been relocated from Cairo, which was previously on display in a square close to the train station, welcoming tourists as soon as they approach the original Egyptian museum near Tahir Square. The three Giza pyramids, which are the graves of the pharaohs Khufu, Khafra, and Menkaure, are visible from the vast second level glass lobby, in an unrivaled panorama.
The 5000 pieces of Tutankhamun's treasure, which Howard Carter initially discovered in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor in November 1922, are expected to draw crowds of visitors from all over the world. All the treasures of the young king, undiscovered for three thousand years, will be on display behind the exhibition cases of the large gallery. These treasures include golden masks, sarcophagi, golden beds and chariots, and mother-of-pearl jewelry inlaid with precious stones.
The renowned solar boat, which belonged to the pharaoh Khufu and was intended to transport souls to the great beyond, is another of the GEM's crown treasures. It is the largest wooden vessel in the world, measuring 42 m in length, 20 tons in weight, and being 4600 years old. It was found in 1954, not far from the tombs of Khufu's pyramid.
The Grand Egyptian Museum will include permanent displays for half of its items. The other half will be preserved in storage and restored and examined there at a sizable research center with 17 enormous, state-of-the-art restoration laboratories.
The GEM is planned to serve as a museum as well as a cultural and tourist complex. The facility will include boutiques, eateries, a meeting center, and a movie theater. The goal? help revitalize Egyptian tourism, a crucial sector of the economy that has struggled to fully recover since the political instability of 2011. Six million people a year are expected to visit the new museum, and they will be able to see the Giza pyramids as well with only one ticket.
The exact date on which the Grand Egyptian Museum will welcome visitors is all that is left to be determined. Numerous dates have been speculated about but not proven. The opening celebrations, which should be spectacular, are most likely to start around the centennial celebrations for the excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb in the fall of 2022.
Welcome to Egypt!
Edfu
Horus Temple Temple of Edfu. The town of Edfu is located halfway between Aswan and Luxor. The most complete temple in Egypt is Edfu Temple, which honors the falcon-headed god Horus, also known as Apollo to the Greeks. Construction began in 237 BC and was completed 180 years later. The Mammisi or Birth House leads up to the temple. You may see various significant writings and scenarios from ancient Egypt in the temple, including the scene from the temple's foundation, details about its building, and a representation of the fabled, long-standing war between Horus and Seth.
The temple and the sugar plant at Kom Ombo, also known as "the Hill of Gold," are well-known. The temple is unique in that it contains two sanctuaries and is dedicated to two different gods—the crocodile-headed god Sobek on the southern side and the falcon-headed god Haroeris on the northern side. The temple was known for being a sanatorium, and seven medical clinics were located to the back of it. Today's familiar medical and surgical instruments are etched on the temple wall. To the left of the temple, you can see the Nilometer used to measure the Nile flood. Numerous crocodiles were present on the property as a temple devoted to Sobek, some of which are currently housed in the Crocodile Museum that was erected there.
On the east bank of the Nile, was Thebaid, the ancient capital of the Nomos Ombites. Every Egyptian dynasty, as well as the Ptolemaic Kingdom and Roman Egypt, used Ombos as a garrison town. It was renowned for the splendor of its temples and its long-running conflict with the Dendera people.
Sobek at the Kom Ombo Temple is fabulous. The first city below Aswan where any noteworthy ancient remains are found is Ombos.
Northwest of the Memphis ruin complex in Egypt's Saqqara Necropolis is the pyramid of Djoser (also called Djeser and Zoser) -- known also as the Step Pyramid of Djoser. In the Egyptian Old Kingdom, during the 3rd Dynasty (c. 2670–2650 BC), Djoser was either the first or second king. He is thought to have governed for 38 years, ruling long enough for his pyramid's magnificent design to be completed during his lifetime.
He is referred to in this tomb as Netjerikhet, his Horus name; Djoser is a name that New Kingdom visitors gave him thousands of years later. The step pyramid built by Djoser is astonishing in how it differs from earlier structures. It establishes a number of significant precedents, the most significant of which is its position as the considered the very first stone-built monument.
The oldest massive stone building in Egypt is a 6-tier, 4-sided construction. It was constructed in the Third Dynasty in the 27th century BC. It is a massive funeral complex with a pyramid at its center and surrounded by ornate ceremonial architecture and adornment. Imhotep, the high priest of the god Ra and the pharaoh's chancellor, designed it.
The initial plan for the pyramid underwent numerous alterations and developments. The pyramid's original height was 62.5 m (205 ft), and its base was 109 m by 121 m. and had a polished white limestone covering. As of 1997 the step pyramid was thought to be the earliest significant man-made structure made of cut stone (as noted above). Although the South American pyramids at Caral being more recent and the nearby enclosure wall "Gisr el-Mudir" being suggested by some Egyptologists to predate the complex.
Most Egyptologists credit Imhotep, Djoser's vizier, with designing and building the complex. After a 14-year repair period the pyramid re-opened in 2020.

Manhattan DA Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. announced this month the return of more than a dozen antiquities worth more than $4 million (EGP 76 million) back to Egypt.
16 antiquities were given back to Egypt officials during a repatriation ceremony. Egypt’s Consul General Howaida Essam Mohamed and U.S. Homeland Security Investigations New York Acting Special Agent in Charge Ricky J. Patel attended the ceremony on September 8, 2022.
Among the most notable artifacts are five illustrative linen fragments that refer to biblical beliefs, the upper part of a painted coffin, bronze statue of a famed ancient Egyptian musician Kemes, a limestone plaque with hieroglyphic engravings and a Roman-era portrait of a lady in Fayoum.
Both historically and culturally priceless, their monetary value shows why artifact collecting was widespread.
The investigation resulted in a first of its kind lifetime ban on having antiquities. District Attorney Bragg said, “Today’s repatriation shows the breadth and prevalence of antiquities trafficking networks, but thanks to the work of our dedicated prosecutors and analysts, we have made tremendous progress in cracking down on this illegal activity”.
“It’s safe to say that we can open an entire museum solely based on the artifacts repatriated,” celebrated Howayda Abdel Rahman, Egypt’s Consul General in New York.
Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities further clarified the repatriation case in a social media press release, offering Egyptians an insight into what artifacts are returning to the homeland.
Nine of the sixteen artifacts were seized from Steinhardt, an American billionaire. Six were taken from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art; is not the first time historical Egyptian artifacts were repatriated from the museum. The MMA currently hosts about 26,000 Egyptian items. In June of this year, five other ancient Egyptian objects were found in the museum and returned to Egypt and in 2019, a golden coffin taken out of Egypt during the 2011 Revolution was found in the museum.
Egypt continues repatriation efforts in combination with the country’s growing museum networks. The government is finishing construction on the Grand Egyptian Museum – Egypt’s largest museum – at the Giza Pyramids complex.
The main cause? A failure to think critically in a group setting is fueled by our desire to conform to a majority and our hesitation to re-evaluate initially rejected solutions. Decisions, in this case, happen too quickly without proper analysis. The anecdote? Encourage every member to critically evaluate and voice concerns, encourage dissension, and as a leader, remain humble and open to criticism.
Meeting people in this day and age can seem complicated and putting yourself out there can be the most intimidating part. Connecting with people in your own city is actually the same as meeting people in another city or even in another country. Traveling doesn’t make it more difficult, in fact, in my experience it makes it even easier!
A lot of people think that when you travel solo, you're actually alone most of the time, and although that can be true, it doesn't have to be. One of the nice things about traveling is that even if you’re shy or an introvert, it's easy to make conversation with people around you because you for sure have ONE thing in common, and that is that you’re in the same place at that time which is enough to start a casual conversation.
Stay in a Hostel
Staying in a hostel is probably the easiest way to meet people. Whether or not you stay in a dorm room or get a private room in a hostel, there’ll be lots of activities available. Just go to the front desk and ask what they have. Hostels normally prepare all sorts of activities from open mic nights to walking tours. Many even have bars, restaurants, and co-working spaces where you can strike up conversation with a fellow solo traveler!
Whether you're helping other humans, saving animals, protecting the environment, volunteering your skills, or assisting in education you are sure to meet someone.
Try looking for a yoga class, bar crawl, or a cooking class to attend. If that’s not for you, learn a new sport, take a language class, or go on a free walking tour. There are so many options once you get over the fear of putting yourself out there.
